That Afro Girl is "made with a little extra love"

This blog is a black girl's hair diary who is learning to love, explore and adore her natural hair pattern. I started this blog to inspire other black women to embrace their natural hair and share tips that have helped me in my own hair journey.

Many people have told me that keeping natural hair of my texture is impossible so I want to prove them wrong. The biggest thing I've learned throughout this journey is that having a community that supports and understands your hair dramas is what will in fact get you through those sometimes bad days.

I hope #ThatAfroGirl can be that for all of us! Check out my Facebook Page

Hello there, my name is Tinashe (you can call me Tina).

I've never been the girl who does super crazy things with her hair. In fact my mother always reminds me how when i was a little girl I used to be such a tomboy, always asking for my hair to get cut off instead of getting ribbons. Getting me to look like this cute little girl for my first passport photos apparently took half a football team.

Anyway I carried this laziness into adulthood always opting for what I like to call the "easy-hair-out". In my case that tended to be a relaxer but lots of braids, braids and more braids.

This continued until I was 15 and I heading to university. It was at this moment that I realized that the only way my hair would make it through uni was if I locked it! I had done my research on how to lock my hair by yourself (there was no Youtube at the time). So I did my first big chop in June 2002 then began locking my hair. As anyone who's ever gone through the locking process will tell you, the first 3 months or so were a hot mess! I mean your hair doesn't even look like your hair but more like a troll's head without the excessive color. Thankfully the locks began to form and they did keep me through undergrad years.

I really, really, loved my dreads but then I got bored because there was only so much styling I could do with them. I didn't want to lose the all my hair again so rather than doing another big chop I decided to see what happens if I buy conditioner them and pick them until they're all out. To my surprise it actually worked!

I wore my hair natural for about 8 months after that and then I just wasn't feeling it because it wasn't bouncy and achieving the looks I had taken my dreads out for.

So I made the decision to get a relaxer again! My hair was never the same - it was now fragile, no volume and worst part ALWAYS breaking! I was too chicken to do a big chop so instead I delayed by trying out all the other things black girls do with their hair like get a weave, a pixie cut etc and then after I got this out of the way I finally did my big chop on October 3, 2011.

Thanks for dropping by, please subscribe to my blog for updates on my hair progress and remember to join my Facebook page too!

Much love,

    1. Thanks Lakisha. Natural hair is definitely a different kinda journey compared to the relaxer. Definitely well worth it and your hair will be much healthier than you can ever imagine so go for it! Good luck!
